When choosing a gate
Width of your gate is the biggest consideration. Gates will normally be slightly shorter than the fence. However gate width determines what you can move into and out of your yard.
As you can see below this ranges from a three foot wide gate, to a ten foot wide gate. The former used for people the latter can be used to pull vehicles into a yard.
Consider:
Cost
Functionality
Aesthetics
Weight
A larger gate will be more functional but will have a higher associated cost. It will also weigh considerably more which could result in beefier construction leading to more supports and possibly wheels or a large header.
Consider the surrounding fences and properties. What is right for your yard but also your neighbourhood.
